Australia’s largest public museum organisation is seeking a Lawyer and Risk Adviser to deliver high quality legal and risk management support within Museums Victoria, including in particular providing legal advice on a broad range of matters to ensure that managers and staff appropriately manage legal and other risks in planning, project management and delivery of organisational objectives.


Museums Victoria cares for the State scientific and cultural collections, providing visitor access, activities and events at five distinct venues:  Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks, IMAX Cinema and world heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building.

This position supports Museum Victoria’s Head of Legal and Risk in the delivery of legal and risk advisory services across Museums Victoria, including in particular advice and support in relation to:

Some notable skills and experience required:

  1. Demonstrated experience in providing authoritative, accurate, and practical legal advice in relation to highly complex and time-sensitive matters, including in relation to areas of law for which the role has duties or accountabilities, such as commercial law, intellectual property, and collections management.
  2. Demonstrated ability to navigate complex issues, documentation and areas of law to provide business areas with simple, plain English advice and guidance.
  3. Demonstrated conceptual, analytical, and decision making skills, including the ability to manage pressure, ambiguity and change, and to self-manage by prioritising tasks, proactively managing client expectations, meeting deadlines, and achieving identified outcomes.


This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 17 months, although flexible working arrangements will be considered. As a VPS 4 level position, the salary on offer is $85,279 per annum (Base of grade); paid pro-rata plus 9.5% superannuation.
