About Lizard Island
We are searching for two people who are interested in living and working in a small scientific community on beautiful Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef.
The Australian Museum is a NSW government institution that is a leading Sydney attraction and a hub of information, resources and research.
Lizard Island Research Station (LIRS) is owned by the Australian Museum and was established in 1973 to provide a facility for coral reef research. It is located on the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef, about 270 km north of Cairns.
LIRS is a world-leading supplier of on-reef facilities for coral reef research and education. Each year, LIRS supports about 100 research projects with visits by about 350 researchers and their assistants. As well, several student groups of up 22 people visit each year. The Station can accommodate up to 37 visitors and it is often full.

About the Role
Maintain all buildings and equipment at the Lizard Island Research Station, to ensure a productive and safe environment for visitors
Key accountabilities
- Maintain and repair all buildings and equipment at the Lizard Island Research Station, including generators, electrical supply system, vehicles, tracks and water supply system
- Ensure adequate and accurate records are kept of servicing and repairs to building, machinery and equipment.
- Timely ordering of spare parts, supplies, diesel and petrol fuel for efficient operation of the facilities.
- Provide assistance and advice to visitors and monitor field activities as directed to ensure efficient and safe operation of the facilities
Essential requirements
- Electrical trade certificate that allows work on existing electrical installations, at least
- Forklift operator’s licence
- Current relevant advanced first aid qualification (at least first aid, CPR, oxygen resuscitation)
- Recreational boat operator’s licence or higher-level boating qualification
- Driver’s license
Desirable
- Additional trade certificates (e.g. outboard motor or diesel engine mechanic, plumber, welder, refrigeration mechanic, etc.)
Coxswain ticket - Marine radio operator licence
- Scuba certificate and experience that meets LIRS regulations for independent diving
- If a diver, current AS 2299 occupational diving medical
- Chainsaw licence
