The Australian Museum (AM) operates within the NSW Department of Justice and was founded in 1827 and is the first museum in Australia. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 18 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. The AM’s purpose is to make nature, Indigenous cultures & science accessible and relevant to everyone.

About the role
Lead and oversee the development, maintenance and preservation of the Australian Museum’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collection, engaging with communities across Australia, and developing strategies to build on culturally significant historical and contemporary collections to ensure objects are relevant and accurately represent communities in line with the Museum’s strategic plan. Provide research and direction for research of the collection and contribute to exhibition development.
Essential Requirements
As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent – Aboriginality/Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977
- Experience working in Museums or Universities
- Sound working knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, with at least one specialisation in a specific area
- Broad knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and how it contributes to culture, and the ability to contribute to debates on key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues
- Links to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications or relevant, equivalent professional experience
