The Australian Museum (AM) operates within the NSW Department of Justice and was founded in 1827 and is the first museum in Australia. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 18 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. About the role
Established in 2012, the Australian Centre for Wildlife Genomics (ACWG) supports all molecular based research carried out by the Australian Museum Research Institute and offer DNA-based molecular diagnostic services to a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, with a primary focus on ecological applications such as species identification, individualisation, conservation and small population management.This role focuses on increasing the impact of science at the Australian Museum by managing the NATA accredited genomics research infrastructure at the AM. This includes strategically planning, resource and staff management and managing multiple lab users including commercial contracts.

Essential Requirements
As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate;
- A PhD or equivalent research experience with a strong background in molecular genetics relevant to museum’s research priorities including knowledge in wildlife biology and ecology across a range of taxonomic groups and experience in conducting scientific research projects, including the ability to appropriately evaluate and interpret data associated with specimens.
- Demonstrated capacity or experience on collection research infrastructure management including knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations (particularly regarding quarantine (biosecurity), dangerous goods, animal care and ethics, and threatened species legislation), and an understanding and demonstrated working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 (particularly for Research and Development facilities).
- Adequate knowledge and experience in order to deliver the Key Accountabilities and perform to the Focus Capabilities outlined in this Role Description.
