About the Australian Museum
The Australian Museum (AM), operating within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, is the first museum in Australia and was founded in 1827. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of Australia and the Pacific region. The AM holds more than 21 million biological, geological and cultural objects in its collections, and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite.

About the Role
To manage the preservation and conservation of the Museum’s extensive and diverse cultural, scientific and archival Collections. Manage the use of collections in Exhibitions to ensure Conservation Guidelines are adhered to and to minimise deterioration of Collections. Manage the Collections Care and Conservation unit to oversight programs and ensure appropriate allocation of financial and staff resources. Undertake strategic and forward planning to conserve the Museum’s Collections for future generations and to meet the Museum’s mission and corporate goals.
Essential requirements
- Required qualifications are established by the Conservators, Cultural Institutions Agreement No 2504 of 1987 and specify: A recognised degree or a 2-year full-time postgraduate or undergraduate diploma in Collections Care and Conservation, or tertiary qualifications in the fields of Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, Archaeology, Anthropology or Fine Arts plus a minimum of 10 years conservation experience in a specialist area of conservation.
