About the Australian Museum

The Australian Museum (AM) operates within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, is the first museum in Australia and was founded in 1827. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 21 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite.

The new AM mission is: To ignite wonder, inspire debate and drive change.

The new AM vision is: To be a leading voice for the richness of life, the Earth and culture in Australia and the Pacific. We commit to transform the conversation around climate change, the environment and wildlife conservation; be a strong advocate for First Nations’ culture; and continue to develop world-leading science, collections, exhibitions and education programs.

For more information, visit the website.

The AM supports a diverse workforce and promotes applications from First Nation and Torres Strait Islander people. People with disabilities who meet the selection criteria are encouraged to apply; and where required, Australian Museum will implement reasonable adjustment consistent with industry standard.

About the Role

We are seeking to backfill the role of Manager Collections Database (EMu) in a Temporary capacity 4 days per week until 30 September 2022.

The Database Manager is responsible for the technical management of the digital collection management system, ensuring it integrates with AM IT and Digital infrastructure, and oversees data standards for data capture, storage and access to achieve project outcomes and support the achievement of Australian Museum objectives.

The role is critical for AMRI as the EMu database is the backbone of Collection Management with all aspects of Collection Management depending on the database. EMu is critical to the Collection Enhancement Project, asset management and collection valuation which are increasingly important.

The role is required to oversee ongoing system updates, the establishment of a new on-line web-based search tool, support for Sapphire (the web based EMu plug in for rapid data entry, etc), and for replacing/developing EMu reports using Crystal. The AM is currently undertaking development of an Online Collections Access portal which requires significant input from this role to maintain the interface between Fotoware, EMu and the new IMu system.
