An exciting opportunity to join Te Papa as the Manager Exhibition Services. This position is responsible for leading, managing and developing the Exhibition Services team, and for managing the installation, deinstallation and maintenance of exhibitions, including the safe and appropriate display of collections.
The Manager Exhibition Services is responsible for leading new practices through prototyping and experimenting with new ideas and ways of working, and is a champion of any practice improvement to deliver outcomes in the most resource efficient ways that make our business more sustainable.
Reporting to the Head of Collection Services, this position sits within the Collections and Research Directorate, home to our core museological practices.
The successful applicant will demonstrate the following:
- Lead, manage and develop a collaborative Exhibition Services team, overseeing staff work programmes, supporting professional growth and creating a culture of continuous improvement
- Plan and manage Exhibition Services resources, as part of the exhibition design and delivery process, in relation to exhibition installations, deinstallations and maintenance
- Deliver collection display services to meet the needs of exhibitions and loans; and collection storage services to meet the needs of acquisitions and collection care
- Liaise, negotiate and consult with stakeholders and manage contracts for services procured to meet the needs of exhibition installations, deinstallations and maintenance
To be successful in the role, you’ll bring the following:
- At least five plus years of proven experience leading, managing and building highly functional teams
- Highly developed listening and communication skills
- Experience working in a museum, gallery or similar environment
- Ability to interpret building design and architectural drawings and specifications
- Technical proficiency in exhibition installations, deinstallations and maintenance, including mount-making, crate-making, framing/matting, and professional art handling
- Experience in managing and negotiating contracts with suppliers
- Highly effective planning, prioritisation, negotiation and influencing skills
- Courage and experience to be creative, take calculated risks, and prototype to bring about increases in work productivity and to support effective work practices
The starting salary for this position will be between $85,000 – $110,000 p.a. with further room for progression through the band. Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role, and internal relativities with other employees.
