The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool and soon to be opened Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is internationally renowned as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our gold-rush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

About the role

The Manager Gardens and Landscape is responsible for the design and development of new landscape and garden areas and for ensuring a high level of presentation is maintained for all garden & landscaped areas within the Sovereign Hill outdoor museum, the Gold Museum Building, Sovereign Hill Hotel, and AURA areas, also includes working closely and cohesively with the Narmbool Garden and Landscape Team as required, whilst providing team leadership and working ‘hands-on’ as an active member of the Gardening Team.

Managing a small team of gardening and landscape employees and apprentices, the incumbent will report to Head of Services and Infrastructure and work closely with service and maintenance team, Engineering Support Officer as well as contractors and Volunteers as and when required.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate:

  • At least five years work in a gardening position/role post Apprenticeship
  • Experience in staff management within a gardening/landscaping environment is essential
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks
  • Initiative and problem solving skills whilst being able to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage projects
  • Well developed written and oral communication skills
  • Must have a pronounced sense of maturity and responsibility to deal with all facets of the general public
  • A solid understanding of and commitment to ensuring a safe work environment
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of a range of horticultural machinery and vehicular plant (chain saws, push-mowers, ride-on mowers, brush cutters, etc)
  • Ability and willingness to work across flexible rosters including weekends, public holidays and school holidays

Required Licences

  • Manual Transmission Driver’s Licence (preferred)
  • Current First Aid Level 2 Certificate
  • Chainsaw Operators Certificate
  • Farm Chemical Users Certificate or equivalent
  • Working at Heights Certificate would be highly desirable
  • Medium rigid licence would be highly desirable

Qualifications

  • Relevant TAFE qualification in Horticulture and/or Landscape Gardening at a Certificate III level or higher is essential
  • Certificate III in Arboriculture would be highly regarded but not essential

The successful applicant must also obtain a Working with Children’s Check and National Police Check.
