The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill outdoor museum, the Gold Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool.
We are currently seeking an Horse Operations Manager to lead the Horse Department Team and Small Animals team. The Manager is responsible for leading improvements in the delivery of efficient and effective animal husbandry round routines and records management. The incumbent must be able to train others in accurately delivering the 1850’s historical background in horse work and horsemanship. Undertaking daily tasks in horse care is a priority to ensure the animals are healthy and fit to work, therefore the successful applicant would need to be familiar in working with Animal Welfare Standards and Codes of Practice in relation to animals on exhibit, breeding, handling etc.
The successful applicant will also need to demonstrate the ability to understand and comply with emerging new Codes, Standards, Guidelines and Toolkits and have the ability to advise the organisation of emerging changes to enable us to adapt and adjust our approach to animal welfare.
The successful applicant must have:
- At least 5 years’ experience working & driving in and around horses
- Excellent knowledge of horse behaviour
- A sound understanding of horse husbandry
- Ability to demonstrate improvements in animal welfare.
- A demonstrated capacity for taking responsibility and ownership of outcomes is essential
- Experience in developing and working with written documentation and successful implementation of safe working procedures
- Experience in staff management within agricultural and/or manufacturing environments including daily routines and efficient management of resource inputs
- Strong leadership skills including the ability to communicate and maintain a healthy working relationship with all staff and create a healthy team spirit
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
- Ability and willingness to work weekends, public holidays and school holidays
Qualifications and Checks
- Qualifications in Horse Management, Animal Handling or similar is essential
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment would be advantageous
- Working with Children Check
- Police Check
- Australian manual drivers licence
- Medium Rigid Licence is preferred but not essential
- Covid Vaccinated – Fully vaccinated by 26 of November
- Pre-employment medical check
