The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to approximately 300,000 visitors each year. MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Its mission is ‘making sense of the world by discovering and interpreting the past and present for the future’. MAGNT became a statutory authority on 01 July 2014. MAGNT has recently commenced planning towards the launch of a world class art museum in central Darwin. The Chan will be the seventh venue of MAGNT, alongside MAGNT at Bullocky Point, the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre) and the Alcoota fossil site.

Primary Objective:

Reporting to the Director and working in partnership with external stakeholders, this position is responsible for MAGNT’s central Australian operations. This will involve managing the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre), our relationships within the Araluen Cultural Precinct, and key organisations in Alice Springs and central Australia. As a member of MAGNT’s Management Team, the position will provide high level policy advice and expertise and participate in strategic planning exercises that contribute to the development of business operations and work plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage MAGNT’s central Australian operations, including the Museum of Central Australia and the Alcoota fossil site.
  2. Manage MAGNT’s relationships within the Araluen Cultural Precinct, and build relationships more broadly with other cultural, tourism, Indigenous and Government organisations in central Australia.
  3. Working in close collaboration with the Director and MAGNT’s Management Team, provide leadership in development and implementation of multi-disciplinary research, exhibition, engagement and collections management programs, as relate to central Australia, and guide timely program delivery within resource allocations.
  4. Manage the staff working across the fields of the Strehlow Research Centre, earth sciences, Aboriginal art and visitor services in central Australia, including contractors.
  5. Develop and maintain professional networks, links to stakeholder groups and partnerships that are representative of MAGNT interests, and promote and represent MAGNT on committees, boards and public events as required.
  6. Utilise professional networks to identify and develop collaborations that deliver enhanced outcomes for MAGNT.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Extensive experience in strategic and business planning within a cultural or scientific environment including, but not limited to: facilities management, policy and procedure development, budgeting and resource management, research methodologies, collection management, conservation, exhibition planning and collection information management.
  2. Advanced degree in a field relevant to a multi-disciplinary museum or art gallery combined with prior experience and training as a senior manager in a related institution.
  3. Strong project and staff management skills with ability to direct, coordinate and review work plans for professional and technical staff; and to evaluate and to update work practice methods and procedures to ensure quality output performance and program delivery in accordance with best contemporary museum practices and industry standards.
  4. High level oral and written communication skills with proven ability to write complex reports, policy papers, Board and Ministerial briefings and other correspondences that report on a diverse range of activities, in an environment requiring performance of multiple tasks and adherence to deadlines.
  5. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and beliefs and to ensure work health and safety system compliance.
  6. Energetic, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable with a sense of humour, able to multi-task and work independently in a hands-on work environment.
  7. A team player with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others.
  8. Highly developed communication and networking skills at the institutional, government and community levels.
  9. Proven experience in computer systems including Excel, PIPS, GAS, TRIPS, TRIM or similar systems.
