An exciting opportunity has become available for a motivated Manager Retail, Venues & Commercial to join the Australian Museum and make a significant impact on leading and driving revenue optimisation.
About the role:
The Manager Retail, Venues & Commercial is responsible for the overall delivery of a high standard of customer service across admissions, retail, outsourced food and beverage services and venue hire and creating the ‘best’ retail experience for all visitors to the Museum.
Typical activities will involve:
- Applying visionary and creative thinking to propose, develop and implement the annual Retail, Venues & Commercial Business Plan.
- Analysing, interpreting and reporting on visitor statistics, services and income generating activities.
- Contributing to the development of annual operating budgets and undertaking regular reviews.
- Keeping commercial partners (e.g. contracted food and beverage partner) engaged to ensure effective supply of services, high levels of service provision and compliance with contract conditions.
- Identifying and implementing measures that will increase revenues, reduce costs and result in valuable commercial opportunities.
- Developing AM branded merchandise and licensing opportunities to promote commercial services and activities.
- Identifying and resolving WH&S and operational issues in commercial areas.
- Leading, coaching and developing a dedicated group of staff.

We provide access, engagement and scientific research to increase understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. Holding more than 18 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections, we develop programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. About you:
As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent industry experience in retail, online retail, e-commerce, commercial operations or venue management.
- Extensive experience in identifying, developing and evaluating new business opportunities.
- Entrepreneurial skills and experience in running a profitable business over several years or working in a successful commercial division of a private/public organisation.
- Sound understanding of managing retail and online retail operations including managing and sourcing merchandise.
- Experience in managing important external supplier relationships and partnerships (e.g. contracted food and beverage partner).
- Well-developed knowledge and understanding of Work Health and Safety (WH&S) legislation and regulations; the Australian Food Standards Code; the Liquor Act and NSW government procurement and tendering processes.
Eligibility to hold the Liquor License on behalf of the Museum.
Must hold, or be willing to complete, a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate.
