Marvel smashes attendance record for GOMA, Brisbane Times, 6 September 2017

The Marvel exhibition at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art has smashed attendance records, with 269,000 visitors over its four-month run.

”Marvel: Creating The Cinematic Universe“, which has been running since May, featured more than 500 pieces including original props and costumes used in filming Marvel movies, especially Thor: Ragnarok, which was partially filmed in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The record attendance helped the gallery to its best year in 2016/17, with 1.73 million visitors – half from interstate or overseas.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Marvel exhibition had flown past the previous attendance record, set by the Andy Warhol exhibition with 232,000 visitors.

“I am proud to lead a government that cares about the arts and exciting arts initiatives delivered across the state are ensuring Queenslanders can access vibrant, diverse and accessible arts and cultural experiences,” she told parliament.

The Palaszczuk government has invested $30 million over four years to attract large-scale film and television productions to Queensland, resulting in film shoots including Thor, Aquaman, and the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
