Media & PR Manager

The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool, the Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is of international renown as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history.  In all, some 350 staff work to bring our goldrush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

We are seeking a Media and Public Relations Manager to join our External Engagement Team at Sovereign Hill. This exiting and diverse role is focused on developing and implementing a media and public relations strategy for one of Australia’s most iconic attractions.

Suited for a media and public relations professional, this role is perfect for a creative individual that can write, tell stories and build relationships. If you’re a journalist, media and public relations professional and are keen for a diverse challenge requiring problem solving and lots of collaboration, we welcome you to apply.  This position is primarily Monday – Friday but requires the successful applicant to have the flexibility to work outside of business hours and on weekends where required. This is a full-time role, laptop, and flexible remote and onsite working arrangements are available.

A typical day might involve:

  • Working with our team to develop content that will improve engagement and enhance our brand
  • Building relationships with key media contacts stakeholders
  • Writing media releases and pitching them to find new audiences
  • Producing briefing notes to support delegated spokespersons
  • Working with our program team to develop new ideas, content and improvements
  • Working with the Head of External Engagement to manage issues as they arise

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • An ability to write and create stories for different audiences
  • Have excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • The ability to develop strategy and manage plans
  • The ability to collaborate with internal teams
  • The ability to present outcomes to stakeholders
  • An understanding and ability to navigate organisational change
  • Experience with social media engagement strategies and best practices

Ideally, your experience would be 5+ years’ experience working in media, PR and / or tourism, and/or relevant degree or post-graduate qualification in journalism, communications, public relations or similar field.
