It is a busy and exciting time for the Art Team as we look to capitalise on the successful opening of the large new Toi Art galleries in 2018 which have attracted high audience visitation and positive critical reception. We are about to embark on several high profile projects showcasing our modern collection and are looking for an energetic curator to join our team. Te Papa’s modern art collection is a rich combination of works by key New Zealand modernists and complemented by an important international collection, particularly strong in British painting.

You will work closely with others in the organisation to:

  • provide curatorial leadership for modern art (1920-1980) research, exhibitions, publications, collection development and programmes.
  • develop and maintain strong relationships with key modern art stakeholders in particular curators, dealers, collectors and benefactors
  • provide stewardship for the modern art collection as a key decision maker for the ongoing care, documentation and use of this collection

The ideal person for this position will have:

  • Proven research skills and a post graduate qualification in art history, preferably relating to the 20th century
  • Passion for communicating art and its histories to diverse audiences using various channels, both written and verbal
  • Sound understanding of curatorial practices and museum ethics
  • Experience curating high quality art exhibitions
  • Capacity to build and maintain relationships with professionals in the field
  • Outstanding ability to facilitate and bring people together to work effectively and collaboratively across teams
