Your Opportunity as the Toowoomba based Museum Development Officer (MDO) you will work with State and local government, staff and volunteers in regional community museums, galleries, historical societies and keeping places. You will engage with cultural heritage industry professionals, sponsors, online visitors and the general public to support the ongoing display and maintenance of collections throughout regional Queensland.The role, based at Cobb and Co Museum in Toowoomba, works with four other regionally based MDOs. The ideal candidate will bring an extensive knowledge of contemporary museum practice and an ability to deliver these skills through training and direct application. Genuine passion for cultural heritage and community engagement, along with high-level communication skills, time management, and a proven record of museum report writing are required.
The Southern Inland Queensland Museum Development Officer will:
- Liaise with and provide expert advice and information about Queensland’s regional heritage collecting organisations and moveable cultural heritage collections to other areas of the museum, professional bodies and other groups outside of the museum including government.
- Engage and communicate with local councils, State and Federal Government agencies regional heritage collecting organisations, and community groups to identify potential projects and issues and provide practical advice and solutions using museum best practice.
- Meet revenue targets through the development and implementation of Service Level Agreements with local government area councils and regional heritage collecting organisations and deliver and manage these projects, budgets and personnel.
- Assess collections across Queensland, provide advice and support, and implement best practice museum skills for the ongoing management of Queensland’s distributed moveable cultural heritage collections.
- Undertake regular travel throughout regional and remote Queensland to establish and support ongoing partnerships between local government and heritage collecting organisations.
- Establish and maintain relationships that support preservation of culture and heritage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage organisations and communities, fostering skill and knowledge development.
- Provide consultancy and information about available grants and manage the application process for grants and external funding opportunities and apply and manage these external funds, projects and personnel.
- Provide monthly reports for the Museum Development office, manage the Service Level Agreement milestones, undertake Corporate Card reconciliation and other administrative tasks associated with the smooth running of the Museum Development Officer office.
- Liaise, consult and negotiate with diverse internal and external stakeholders to foster productive networks, relationships and partnerships.
- Provide information and training to staff and volunteers to raise the professional standards of all areas of museum practice for regional organisations holding cultural heritage collections.
- Manage and coordinate an emergency support service for museums that require urgent assistance because of natural disasters or other serious threats to significant collections.
- Develop a safety culture in the team by modelling and safe practices and behaviour, implementing all required procedures, reducing your safety risks, as far as reasonably practicable, before work commences.
