National Programs Officer – Questacon Science and Learning

Questacon is seeking officers for the delivery of programs, activities and resources contributing to Questacon’s national presence strategy.

Questacon delivers high quality learning experiences and activities to metropolitan, regional and remote areas across Australia. Questacon’s national programs integrate a range of Questacon education activities including science shows, student workshops, intensive learning experiences for different audiences, pop-up science centres and educator activities. These activities may be delivered in-person in communities or via video conference.

The position also assists with the development of new program elements as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Successful applicants will have opportunities to develop skills across the range of program activities.

Key duties of the role include:

  • Delivering workshops and presentations using a range of media, tools and technologies to primary and secondary school students and occasionally other groups across regional and remote areas and within Questacon’s two Canberra facilities. This role will require significant travel of at least 12 weeks a year.
  • Liaising with teachers, students and communities to engender enthusiasm about opportunities in all fields of science, technology, engineering, design and innovation.
  • Developing, trialling and evaluating new content, activities and delivery methods for the education outreach teams.
  • Developing skills in the safe use of a range of technologies, software and tools, and sharing these skills with others.
  • Assisting in mentoring the Shell Questacon Science Circus masters student presenters.
  • Providing open communication to all team members, including giving and receiving feedback and effectively contributing as part of a team.
  • Carrying out other activities as required in support of Questacon’s national programs, including administration, activity reports and ensuring safe keeping of Questacon assets.
  • Living and working with a small team in modest accommodation for periods of time away from home base, including extensive driving in regional areas.
  • Safe use of tools and moderate level of manual handling including lifting/moving presentation materials, tools and equipment in and out of vehicles.
  • Working within Australian Government guidelines (e.g. Workplace Health and Safety, APS Values and Code of Conduct).
