Under limited direction the New Acquisitions Conservator will work in the Preservation Programs team focussed on incoming acquisitions for the National Collection. Work will involve preliminary assessments for hazards and condition; preventive conservation processing including freezer and anoxic treatments, rehousing and documentation; and coordination of new acquisition workflows between conservation labs. The position will work in close collaboration with conservation labs and material specialists to decide the appropriate course of action for new acquired objects to ensure their preservation and also with the Registration team on rehousing and movement of new acquisitions.

Core responsibilities

  • Coordinate the conservation processing of incoming donations, purchases and transfers to the National Collection;
  • Prepare new acquisitions for preventive conservation treatments including freezer and anoxic processes;
  • Coordinate stabilisation treatments as required with conservation labs;
  • Provide conservation advice as part of new acquisition assessments;
  • Carry out pre-acquisition inspections in collaboration with other conservators and the Registration team and make recommendations regarding conservation considerations on a diverse range of collection types;
  • Collaborate with other conservators and collection management specialists on storage and rehousing;
  • Manage conservation materials, supplies and equipment required for new acquisitions;
  • Document all conservation and preservation activities on the Memorial’s Collection Management System;
  • Report on new acquisitions processing times and resourcing to the Collection Services management group.
