Media Release , 4 March 2015

I am very pleased to announce that Janet Carding has been appointed as the new Director of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Ms Carding was most recently the Director of the Royal Ontario Museum, one of Canada’s leading museums.

Prior to this appointment in 2010 she held a number of senior roles including Assistant Director at the Australian Museum in Sydney from 2004 – 2010, and Head of Planning & Development at the National Museum of Science and Industry in London from 2001 – 2004.

Ms Carding’s passion for museums and galleries combined with her extensive experience across the globe makes her an excellent choice for this important role.

As director of the Royal Ontario Museum she introduced innovative new formats through digital and social media to engage new audiences, in particular young adults.

During her time in Canada she also worked with the broader cultural community as Vice President of the Canadian Museums Association, and as a board member of the Toronto Arts Council.

The Chair of TMAGs Board of Trustees Geoff Willis said he was very pleased at Ms Carding’s appointment.

“The Trustees are delighted that our extensive search process has attracted such an outstanding candidate to lead TMAG and join Tasmania’s cultural development,” Mr Willis said.

Ms Carding will commence in her new role on 8 April 2015.

I would also like to thank Jennifer Storer for her important contribution as Acting Director for the past 15 months.
