The Northern Territory Government values the important role the arts play in shaping the Territory’s culture. The arts also enhance community life and contribute to economic growth.

The Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities, through Arts NT, is now seeking to develop an arts strategy for the Territory. The strategy aims to inform arts sector and government priorities and will guide government investment into the arts over the next 10 years.

Scope

The NT Arts Strategy Discussion Paper provides background and explores current and contemporary issues impacting the arts sector in the NT and nationally. The paper is informed by the National Cultural Policy – Revive: a place for every story, a story for every place(External link)and acknowledges the significant consultations conducted that contributed to its development. The paper is also informed by the Creative Industries Strategy NT 2020-2024(External link).

Identified key challenges and opportunities include:

  • First Nations Led: First Nation leading First Nation arts initiatives
  • Inclusive Expression: Accessibility and Inclusion
  • Empowered Tomorrow: Sustainability and Growth
  • Connected Collaboration: Community engagement, cultural exchange and collaboration
  • Elevated Value: Identity and building value
  • Protected Creativity: New technology and innovation
  • Shaping the Arts: Advocacy and policy

Arts NT wants to hear from individuals and organisations from across the Northern Territory with an active interest in the arts.

The Northern Territory Government is seeking input on key issues within the arts sector that are important to you to develop a 10-year arts strategy.

Your feedback will inform the NT Government’s future investment in the arts so that all Territorians can access, participate and thrive in the creative and cultural life of the Territory.

With a draft vision to embrace the power of the arts to foster creativity and share our Territory stories, the strategy seeks to:

  • grow the arts sector’s capacity and value
  • increase access and participation
  • foster artistic excellence and leadership.

The NT Arts Strategy Discussion Paper provides a starting point to commence this conversation. The Discussion Paper explores current contemporary issues impacting the arts sector.
