Job Description:
The Objects Conservator performs and documents remedial and preventive conservation work on a wide variety of materials in the National Collection, including objects made of metals, ceramics, wood, plastics, glass and stone. The work includes: condition survey, treatment and preventive conservation; participation in multi-disciplinary teams ; and the implementation of new or improved conservation techniques to prepare objects for preservation, access and display.

Responsibilities:

  1. Under the supervision of the Senior Conservator, carry out work to preserve and conserve objects in the National Collection.
  2. Document all conservation and preservation activities on the Memorial’s Collection Management System (MICA).
  3. Undertake research and scientific analysis to determine the composition and condition of materials to inform the development and implementation of conservation techniques and procedures, including the identification and management of hazards in the collection.
  4. Conduct manual handling tasks including collection handling and movement, installation, and packing.
  5. Participate as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the scoping, development and delivery of conservation-related projects, including: exhibitions, preventive conservation, hazard mitigation, chemical management, and integrated pest management.
  6. Mentor the work of staff, volunteers and students in conservation research, treatments and projects and assist with their training and development.
