The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool and soon to be opened Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is internationally renowned as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our gold-rush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

About the role

The primary purpose of the role is to use the principals of Thematic Interpretation to entertain, inform and engage visitors while presenting the social and mining history of Ballarat.  All whilst providing a high standard of customer service in a pleasant and enthusiastic manner.  As an Operations Interpreter, you will play a vital role in the visitor experience and provide teamwork and support to the team.  You will be confident in the delivery of historical information to visitors and learn the necessary skills to provide accurate and interesting information with your interaction with the visitors.  Activities will also include general maintenance and setting up around the museum, and retail support.  Due to this, the successful applicants must be physically capable of bending and squatting and able to open and close tents, demonstrate, and assist visitors with gold panning.  A pre-employment medical is required before commencement.

This role will ideally suit applicants with the following competencies:

  • Previous experience within a tourism or customer service environment would be highly regarded
  • Presenting/Public Speaking/Interpreting experience is preferred but not essential
  • Strong performance/Presenting skills with the confidence to address large groups of approx 40 people would be highly regarded
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated cash handling skills
  • Basic knowledge on the use of hand tools and OHS requirements is preferred but not essential
  • Ability to work across flexible rosters including weekends, public holidays and school holidays

This is a casual role which will require weekend, school holiday and public holiday work.  The successful applicant must also obtain a Working with Children’s Check and National Police Check.
