Gwoonwardu Mia – Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage Cultural Centre

Gwoonwardu Mia was established to be a common meeting place for the five language groups of the Gascoyne Region, celebrate Aboriginal culture, be a significant tourism attraction and provide quality employment opportunities for Aboriginal people. After an extended period of closure, from the 15 July 2019, the Western Australian Museum has undertaken to manage Gwoonwardu Mia and reopen the Cultural Centre.
The Western Australian Museum will work collaboratively with Aboriginal communities in the Gascoyne to achieve a financially and culturally sustainable Cultural Centre which maximises its business potential and is also the recipient of ongoing state support.

Location
This position is located in Carnarvon which lies at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on the Indian Ocean between Shark Bay and Ningaloo Reef, approximately 900 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. Carnarvon is a service town with links to other towns in the Gascoyne Region.
Job Description
The Operations Manager Engagement and Events provides leadership and direction through managing and monitoring human and physical resources for the site’s daily operations, under the direction of the Centre’s Regional Manager Business and Strategy.
This position will be responsible for leading the development of strong, sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships between the Aboriginal people of the Gascoyne region, Gwoonwardu Mia and the Western Australian Museum to enhance and activate the Centre’s vision through the development, implementation and evaluation of high quality programs, experiences and resources that are relevant to the business.
This role requires an individual with strong leadership qualities to play an active lead role in the management of the team responsible for creation of authentic visitor experiences from concept to delivery, including the training of the Visitor staff.
The successful applicant with have the skills to develop and implement business plans, policies and procedures for hiring the venues for functions and special events as well as having strong cultural engagement and interpersonal skills to connect with local artists to identify Gallery Shop products and develop residencies and exhibitions.
Conditions
This is a full-time, fixed-term vacancy, for a period of 24 months, with a possibility of extension. There will also be a Pool running for a period of 24 months from the initial appointment. Applicants deemed suitable will be placed into a pool where appointments may be considered for similar vacancies for full-time, part-time, casual, fixed term or permanency.
