As an experienced Blacksmith, you will work closely with the Sovereign Hill Museums Association, contributing to the historical demonstrations and displays for our visitors. You’ll be vital to the preservation of traditional smithing techniques. We’re looking for a passionate individual who will appreciate the rich history we preserve and have the rare mix of practical hands-on skills and the ability to educate a diverse range of museum patrons.
Responsibilities:
- Perform traditional blacksmith duties such as forging and shaping metal, operating an anvil, and hammering hot iron.
- Conduct demonstrations of blacksmithing techniques for museum visitors in a safe and engaging manner.
- Maintain blacksmith shop, ensuring it is stocked, organised, safe and operates efficiently.
- Participate in the concept development, design and production of bespoke metalwork projects.
- Liaise with the museum’s other departments and visitors to understand requirements for productions and custom designs.
- Train and supervise apprentices, while also maintaining a commitment to your own ongoing professional development.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to forge and shape metal and operate traditional blacksmith tools.
- Experience in giving public demonstrations or workshops.
- Possess a strong understanding and appreciation of historical and traditional blacksmithing techniques.
- Ability to work on both individual and team projects.
- Strong safety awareness to ensure the wellbeing of oneself, the team and the visiting public.
- Relevant qualifications in Blacksmithing, Metalworking, or related field will be highly regarded.
