As a dynamic science communicator, you will be a key contributor in SparkLab, Queensland Museum’s (QM) interactive science centre, playing a pivotal role in fostering a love for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in children and their families.

Your enthusiastic, energetic, and creative approach will be instrumental as you lead hands-on activities and facilitate inquiry-based learning experiences, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

A day on the job can include delivering visitor led curriculum linked science explorations, facilitating design thinking workshops, engaging with visitors, mentoring team members, and resolving visitor enquiries.

The STEM Experience Officer will:

  • Facilitate inquiry learning and design thinking for visitors through onsite and offsite exhibit engagement, learning programs and activities
  • Provide input and develop new STEM programs or exhibits as required.
  • Oversee the delivery of day-to-day operations of the SparkLab, including quality of delivery and audience experience, bookings processes, materials inventory and ordering, risk management, safety, security and exhibit oversight to create a seamless, consistent and compelling visitor experience.
  • Lead daily team briefings within the SparkLab and oversee the completion of end-of-day reports.
  • Train and operationally supervise Visitor Experience Officers and volunteers in SparkLab engagement, including new programs and exhibits as necessary.
  • Create a collaborative, positive and inclusive team culture by facilitating open communication, providing regular coaching and feedback to staff and resolving issues in a proactive and timely manner.
  • Engage with and deliver professional development sessions to educational professionals around the use of SparkLab, museum collection and QM’s learning resources.
  • Build and maintain knowledge and collaborative partnerships internally and externally with stakeholders, community, cultural and education networks.
  • Lead safety and security operations pertaining to visitor wellbeing, evacuation, crowd control and the protection of exhibition content within SparkLab and offsite delivery.
  • Comply with QM policies, procedures and appropriate legislation including a demonstrated commitment to creating a child safe and youth friendly learning environment.
  • Contribute to the safety culture of QM by reporting all incidents and hazards and ensuring work is undertaken in the safest way possible, following all QM WHS policies and/or procedures and guidelines relevant to the job
