Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collections and culture are central to the Museums’ purpose and vision, connecting the dynamic, complex history of Australia with contemporary life in Queensland. Creating authentic, evidenced-based collections that honour the rich history of our First Nations people and their connection to land, culture, and language, is paramount to the work of the Collections and Research directorate.

First Nations curatorship and strategic leadership is central to the authentic representation and inclusion of culture, for the Queensland Museum.

Reporting to the Head, Culture and Histories, the appointment of a First Nations Principal Curator is critical to ensuring authentic development and showcasing of the collection material, including its acquisition, representation, and repatriation. Supported by a motivated Executive, the successful candidate will be enabled to design, grow, and celebrate First Nations’ culture internally and externally, integrating and celebrating the value of First Nations knowledge across all collections.

Key functions connected to the role include:

  • Develop and nurture meaningful connections with First Nations communities throughout Queensland, enabling community voice to contribute to the development and acquisition of collection material
  • Lead best practice research and evaluation to ensure collection, custodianship and management is culturally safe
  • Support the advancement of First Nations’ strategic priorities across the Queensland Museum network
  • Conduct research in a specialist subject area within the priority themes of the Queensland Museum in collaboration with researchers from other research organisations, leading to internationally recognised peer-reviewed publications, popular publications and other media outputs.
  • Develop, foster, and promote good relationships with community stakeholders, to enhance engagement from across Queensland. Demonstrate and lead model cultural awareness and good practice in working with Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and promote Reconciliation through engagement with the Museum and its collections.

Leading a small team, this role will develop  internal and collaborating curatorial and collection staff The successful First Nations candidate will possess a credible management experience, research record and curatorship expertisee, supported by a deep understanding of stakeholder engagement and exhibition development.

Possessing core leadership traits of inclusiveness, empathy and courageous thinking, the Principal Curator will work closely with the Head of Program and Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure the centrality of culture, co-design and the voice of community across the Queensland Museum Network.

Your application for this role will remain current for 12 months and may be considered for recurring vacancies which may be at an alternative location or alternative employment basis (full-time or part-time).

Postgraduate qualification/s in a field relevant to the position or equivalent is required.
