We seek to appoint a highly motivated, productive museum professional with a demonstrated track record of research outputs, international collaborations, grant funding, collections based research and exhibitions related to one aspect of the Cultural collections. You will manage all aspects of the Indigenous Cultures unit within the Cultures and Histories Program, providing strategic and operational advice and support to the Head of Program. You will lead and manage a team of curators and collections staff to undertake original research, ensuring the museum plays a significant international role in the research and dissemination of material culture collections. You will have a research record in one of the areas covered by the Indigenous Cultures Collections.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS: 

Postgraduate qualification/s in a field relevant to the position or equivalent is required

The position will supervise curatorial and collections management staff and project staff and contribute to the development and implementation of innovative public programs and exhibitions including the major new Gallery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures(opening 2019).

The Museum is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic professional, equally comfortable and experienced in managing people and conducting research. The successful applicant for the role will be flexible and responsive to ongoing organisational change, confident in working in a project driven environment, and have previously undertaken research and management responsibilities in a Museum context.

This role involves leading the care and curation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections, Pacific collections and Indigenous collections from other areas of the world and Archaeology. Collections strengths include cultural material from Queensland and Northern Territory Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Australian South Sea Islander and Pacific Collections (particularly Western Pacific). Archaeology collections are mainly from maritime and terrestrial sites in Queensland with comparative material from across the world.

The post will include ongoing community engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community stakeholders and includes working with Repatriation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement programs. It is essential for the postholder to have experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia. In this regard, applicants will need to nominate an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander who are recognised and accepted within their respective community as a referee.
