Position Description
The Program Director, Gallery Development is responsible for the overall delivery of the Museum’s gallery development program, including undertaking overall project management duties, the development of budgets, procurement strategies and schedules, and the management of contracts and logistical support for the gallery development program.
The Program Director, Gallery Development reports to the Deputy Director, Programs and Engagement and receives broad general guidance in relation to strategic and operational outcomes from their supervisor, the Major Projects Steering Committee and the Executive Management Group. The position holder is accountable for the successful implementation of the overall program and will work closely with each of the gallery development project teams and a range of key Museum business units. He/she will also liaise with a range of external stakeholders and organisations, including contractors and consultants and other service providers as necessary.
Specifically the role is responsible for:
- Being accountable to the Major Project Steering Committee for the delivery of overall gallery development program outputs, project schedules and budgets.
- Coordinating, with gallery development project producers, the preparation of individual gallery development forward plans, budgets, project schedules, contracts, agreements and strategy documents.
- Facilitating each gallery development project interpretation plan, including the shaping and articulating of concepts, narratives, interpretation methods, visitor journeys, and the development of detailed content briefs, design briefs, and multimedia and digital briefs, with a view to ensuring a consistent approach is taken across the suite of projects.
- Facilitating the development of gallery development audience engagement strategies for each gallery development project with a view to ensuring a consistent approach is taken across the suite of projects.
- Managing the relationship between gallery development projects and other major Museum initiatives to ensure that these projects are integrated with all significant Museum outputs.
- Managing the development of all project documentation for the phases of each gallery development project according to the Museum’s Project Management Methodology or other agreed methodology.
- Supporting gallery development project producers in the development of policy and procurement documents.
- Supporting gallery development project producers in the development, negotiation and management of large and multiple contracts.
- Providing leadership to the development of a culture of creative and innovative gallery development project delivery.
- Ensuring that he/she has sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake his/her work safely and that employees in the project team are provided with sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to enable them to perform their duties safely.
Selection criteria

- Demonstrated sophisticated knowledge and understanding of developing and delivering Museum exhibitions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, project management theory and its application to exhibitions.
- Demonstrated ability to manage relationships particularly with key stakeholders and external parties.
- Demonstrated and sophisticated ability to problem solve, especially in a time pressure and outcome critical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, coordinate, and lead the work of multiple teams engaged on complex creative projects, and to work effectively across Museum divisions and Business Units.
- Demonstrate understanding and ability to effectively manage upward.
