Establishing the Powerhouse’s First Nations Directorate in 2021 marked a historic moment in the museum’s 140-year history, establishing a self-determined direction for Indigenous leadership, representation and engagement. The First Nations Directorate is responsible for setting the nature and direction of all Indigenous activities and is committed to embedding Indigenous methodologies across all areas of museum operations. The Directorate is Indigenous-led and promotes First Nations aspirations for excellence within the sector.

The Powerhouse intersects the arts, design, science, and technology and is critical in engaging communities with industry and practice. Established in 1881, the museum includes the Powerhouse Ultimo, Powerhouse Castle Hill, and Sydney Observatory and will expand to include the museum’s new flagship – Powerhouse Parramatta.
