Auckland Museum is an influential, much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its extensive collections and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories.

Auckland Museum is offering two FTE 3 year fixed term opportunities for two highly motivated Collection Managers to join the Museum at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal.

The Project Collection Managers, Human History will play a vital role in the implementation of new galleries and permanent exhibitions throughout Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum within scope of the Phase One Gallery Renewal Programme. They will be responsible for the expert physical care, handling, advice, documentation and access to Auckland Museum’s human history collections, with a particular focus on the taonga Māori, Pacific and History collections identified for gallery renewal and related public programmes. Managed by the Senior Collection Manager Human History, at a project level they will work closely with the Project Manager, specialist and project Curators, and the Gallery Renewal team to develop and deliver galleries and associated projects.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Relevant graduate/postgraduate qualifications or equivalent experience in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of best practice in collection care and management relating to of any or all of the following: taonga Māori, Pacific, history collections and/or material culture
  • Proactive awareness and engagement with a wide range of cultures and associated protocol and traditions within Auckland, with particular reference to the Māori Dimension (He Kōrahi Māori) and Pacific Dimension (Teu le Vā)
  • Understanding of kaitiakitanga and manakitanga
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
  • A passion for dynamic museums and for working in a cross functional team environment
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to ethical and safe work practices
  • Understanding of the principles and practice of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the implications of this for the work of the museum
  • The Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends
  • Experience using mechanical equipment to access objects (e.g. forklift, wave lifter, etc) desirable
