Project Collection Manager – Human History

Auckland Museum is a much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its extensive collections and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories.

Auckland Museum currently has a fixed-term opportunity for a highly motivated Collection Manager to join the Museum at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal.

The position plays an important role in the implementation of new galleries and permanent exhibitions within Auckland Museum’s Phase One Gallery Renewal Programme. As one of a team of Collection Managers, the role is responsible for expert physical care, handling, advice, documentation and access to the Museum’s Human History collections, with a particular focus on the taonga Maori, Pacific and History collections identified for gallery renewal and loans. This fixed term role will run until November 2019 and work closely with the Gallery Renewal team to develop and deliver galleries and associated projects.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Relevant graduate/postgraduate qualifications or extensive equivalent experience in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of best practice in collection care and management relating to of any or all of the following: taonga Maori, Pacific, history collections and/or material culture
  • Experience in loans of museum objects, including negotiating of loan agreements, is highly advantageous
  • A current and full drivers’ licence is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal and effective time management skills
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of tikanga Maori, especially relating to museum collections
  • The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends
  • Current certification and prior experience using mechanical equipment to access objects (e.g. forklift, wave lifter, etc) is also highly advantageous

This role, along with the contribution of the broader Collections and Research directorate is at the heart of many of the Museum’s aspirations. The collections, and knowledge about them, are often the essential raw material for exhibitions, programmes and events for family, formal education and tourist audiences.

This role is as varied as the working environment and will require enthusiasm, a hard work ethic and flexibility from the successful candidate.
