Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira

Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections and the employees and volunteers who tell the Museum’s stories. We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.

The Documentary Heritage team requires a fixed-term and part-time Collection Technician to assess unprocessed donations of published material for accession or disposal. Experience in using online research tools is essential, along with practical ability in the safe handling of boxes of books and use of ladders. This role is suitable for a recent library school or museum studies graduate seeking an entry-level position and offers 24 hours per week until the end of June 2020.

This role sits at the heart of many of the Museum’s aspirations as expressed in Future Museum and helps deliver on Auckland War Memorial Museum’s guiding principle of kaitiakitanga – providing care for the collections and stories entrusted to us.

To be successful in this role, you will offer:

  • A tertiary-level qualification in a discipline relevant to the Museum’s activities
  • Have demonstrated research experience
  • Familiarity with library databases, as well as offer intermediate to advanced MS Excel and Word skills
  • Have an excellent appreciation of and interest in the Documentary Heritage collections of the Museum
  • Sound knowledge of New Zealand history, particularly of NZ history, Māori history, NZ publishing, NZ society/culture, Natural Sciences and Human History
  • The ability to physically lift objects of a medium weight, climb ladders and occasionally use mechanical equipment, such as a wave lifter
  • Self-starting motivation, as well as high attention to detail
  • The ability to prioritise tasks and work collaboratively with team members and other colleagues

You must be eligible to work in New Zealand to apply for this position.

Auckland Museum offers a rich and fulfilling work-life where we embrace diversity and nurture our bicultural capability as demonstrated in our Teu le Va and He Korahi Maori strategies. We also offer a range of great benefits such as flexible work and leave and an award-winning wellbeing programme.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to be part of a fabulous New Zealand organisation committed to telling our national and Auckland stories, reflecting our unique place in the South Pacific.
