Auckland Museum is committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibitions, events and educational programmes and providing strong management of the taonga we care for underpinned by Te Korahi Maori.
The Collection Department currently has an opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic professional to join the Museum at an exciting time of development and renewal as a Conservator within our Te Awe project.
The Conservator will be part of the core project team dedicated to readying the Auckland Museum’s collections for Future Museum – the Museum’s 20 year strategic plan, starting with taonga Maori collections. The Conservator will also be part of the Collection Care team which is part of the Collections and Research Directorate. Working closely with the project team, Conservators, Curators and Collection Managers, you will be responsible for expert physical care and improvement of the Maori carving Collection. This position will be responsible for organising conservation work flow in conjunction with Te Awe colleagues.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A degree in conservation
- Member of NZCCM or internationally recognised Conservation affiliations
- Experience in treating wooden and painted objects. Experience in plant fibre conservation would be an advantage
- Experience in working with taonga Maori
- Knowledge in Tikanga Maori
- Excellent manual dexterity and experience in making object supports
- Excellent spatial sense and ability to work in tight spaces and handling large objects
- Up to date knowledge of current professional thinking around preventive conservation
- Experience working in a museum environment would be an advantage
- Vernon database experience would be an advantage
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross functional teams
- Experience in organising work flow in a conservation environment in consultation with others
- Excellent communication skills along with tact, discretion and confidentiality
- A current driver’s licence
- Understand the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi as they relate to the Museum environment
