Auckland Museum is an influential, much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events and educational programmes.
The Project Curator will provide curatorial expertise in Natural Sciences collections and research directed towards the development of narratives and content central to the implementation of new galleries in Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum.
The role will contribute to research, collection development, promotion of collection access, and the development of long-term exhibitions and public programs related to the Natural Science collections – that include floral, faunal, palaeontological and geological collections – and on museum research primarily of the Auckland region and the regional Pacific. To be successful in this role, you will:
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications or equivalent experience in a field relevant to the museum’s Natural Sciences collections
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of natural science collections and related research
- Proactive awareness and engagement with a wide range of cultures and associated protocol and traditions within Auckland, with particular reference to the Māori Dimension (He Kōrahi Māori) and Pacific Dimension (Teu le Vā)
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to natural science objects and their interpretive value, and as a core resource for researchers, communities and for museum activities
- Evidence of strong networks with natural science researchers, peers and communities at local, national and international levels
- Demonstrated experience in contributing to the development of public programmes and exhibitions in a museum context
- Demonstrated experience/aptitude in digital storytelling
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams.
- Understanding of the principles and practice of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the implications of this for the work of the museum
