The Collections, Research & Learning Directorate is home to our core museological capabilities that collect, curate, conserve and protect Taonga, in order to deliver on Te Papa’s mission as New Zealand’s national museum. Physical and digital access to our collections and expertise is provided through activities spanning curatorial research, collection management and development, conservation, exhibition development, learning, public programmes and outreach. Collection, Research & Learning’s strong leadership, technical expertise and ability to build enduring relationships with external agencies and communities ensures we extend accessibility and that we are recognised as a centre of museological excellence.

We have an exciting opportunity to join this team as a Public Programme Coordinator.

The Public Programmes Coordinator role is responsible for assisting the Manager Public Programmes and the Public Programme Specialists and supporting them in activating Te Papa’s collections, exhibitions and resources to enrich visitors’ experiences through a dynamic series of high-quality public programmes and lifelong learning opportunities.

Reporting to the Head of Public Programming, the Public Programmes Coordinator is part of Public Programming Team that also includes the members of the Mahuki Team (Mahuki is Te Papa’s Innovation Accelerator). The Public Programmes Coordinator will work collaboratively with team members within Te Papa and with external partners, communities and audiences.  They will have a strong focus on operational and administrative components of the team’s work and supporting the Manager Public Programmes and Public Programme Specialists to ensure the development, promotion and delivery of innovative, inclusive and participatory programmes that are memorable, meaningful and meet identified targets. The Public Programmes Coordinator will support the Manager Public Programmes and Public Programmes Specialists in the creation of a wide range of public programmes with broad reach, employing digital channels and technologies and/or other offsite activations to extend impact and access for diverse audiences.

 You will be required to:

  • Support the Manager Public Programmes and Public Programmes Specialists’ planning and delivery of public programmes.
  • Support the Public Programmes team in the delivery of innovative, participatory programmes that deeply engage and positively impact diverse audiences in lifelong learning, which ideally endures beyond a single visit or encounter.
  • Support the Public Programmes team in the development of programmes in partnership with external partners and stakeholders, and actively engage communities and build audiences. Work collaboratively with the Public Programmes team to identity opportunities for audience research and co-creation, where appropriate.
  • Support the smooth and professional delivery of a range of programmes, including contracting and coordinating venue, contractors, performers and equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Public Programme team to maximise programme reach and facilitate public access to Te Papa’s digital assets through the use of a variety of media, engagement strategies and communication channels.
  • Support the execution of programmes that embrace Te Papa’s mana taonga philosophy and identify opportunities to promote the use of te reo Māori.
  • Work with the Marketing team to advise on and/or participate in the production of marketing collateral to support and promote public programmes.
