Te Papa’s mission is to understand the past, enrich the present and meet the challenges of the future. Te Papa is more than just the national museum that houses New Zealand’s treasures. It is a meeting place, a place for lifelong learning, and a place that inspires a sense of wonder and connection.

The Audience and Insight Directorate leads the design and delivery of exceptional experiences for our visitors.  It takes an integrated approach to how Te Papa connects people, taonga and stories in order to achieve a sense of wonder, belonging and purpose.  Functions including audience analysis and insight, programme management and evaluation, marketing and communications, content and experience design, education and public programmes are brought together in a way that helps our people create and deliver visitor facing activities to maximise the value, reach and impact of their offering.  It also provides Te Papa with the museological edge needed to deliver outstanding audience experiences.

We have an exciting opportunity to join this team as a Public Programme Specialist.

The Public Programmes Specialist is responsible for activating Te Papa’s collections, exhibitions and resources to enrich visitors’ experiences through a dynamic series of high-quality public programmes and lifelong learning opportunities.

Reporting to the Head of Public Programming, the Public Programmes Specialist is part of a team of Public Programme Specialists that works collaboratively with Exhibition, Digital and Curatorial teams, and with external partners, communities and audiences to develop, promote and deliver a coherent programme that activates public engagement with Te Papa, its collections, exhibitions, debate and discussion.

 You will be required to:

  • Develop and deliver innovative, participatory programmes that deeply engage and positively impact diverse audiences in lifelong learning that ideally endures beyond a single visit or encounter.
  • Develop and deliver public programmes for exhibitions, research programmes, community outreach and partner initiatives.
  • Define audiences, learning objectives and performance targets, and carry out audience and user research, within areas of responsibility.
  • Execute programmes that embrace Te Papa’s mana taonga philosophy and identify opportunities to promote the use of te reo Māori.
  • Contribute to the establishment and realisation of public programmes strategy, systems and processes and the development of an annual, cross-disciplinary public engagement plan that is aligned to Te Papa’s strategic priorities, audiences and users, delivery channels and KPIs.
  • Be available for some flexibility to deliver programmes outside business hours and in the weekend as required.

Te Papa is committed to the protection and wellbeing of children. A component of this role involves interaction with children so, as a part of the assessment process, we will require Police Vetting of preferred candidates to ensure we are providing a safe environment for children. This requirement complies with the Vulnerable Children Act 2014.

To apply, please provide a cover letter describing how your skills and background fit with this role and your ambitions for it, and a CV that details your relevant work experience.
