Public Programming Specialist Kaupapa Māori

Te Papa is seeking an innovative creative producer to help grow Māori content within the museum’s wider public programme. You will help us develop our offer for all audiences, with a special focus on working for and with Māori communities, to create meaningful opportunities to engage with resources and collections at Te Papa and support building our audiences.

The Public Programming team comprises a range of creative producers, strongly motivated to work for and with our communities and to create space for meaningful engagement at Te Papa for a range of audiences. Our Specialists are all responsible for the creative design, development, delivery, and evaluation of their programmes, with strong support for one another’s work. Most programmes are delivered at Te Papa, with digital and social integration.

You will work as part of our Public Programmes team to develop and deliver innovative public programmes for and with our audiences that engage with te ao Māori, drawing on resources across teams in Te Papa such as Mātauranga Māori and Iwi Relationships. You will draw on your experience working with whānau, hapū and iwi, managing relationships and combine that with your creativity and operational skills to innovate in engaging Māori audiences in new ways. You will lead on a range of kaupapa such as Matariki, with strong support from a dedicated team. You will support our team to embed te ao Māori concepts within public programmes and help develop our relationship with iwi and new audiences. You will also work alongside other staff at Te Papa such as curatorial, collections, exhibitions, and visitor services teams.

We work right across the breadth of activities at Te Papa, and we’re looking for a public programmes specialist who will help us create a range of dynamic programmes with a strong foundation in Te Aō Māori, and to work with and for Māori communities.

About the role

This is a permanent ongoing role. Some flexibility in hours to supervise and deliver public programmes on evenings and weekends is required. The starting salary for this position will be between $66,000 to $91,000, with further room for progression through the band. Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role and internal relativities with other employees.

Te Papa is committed to the protection and well-being of children. A component of this role involves interaction with children so, as a part of the assessment process, we will require Police Vetting of preferred candidates to ensure we are providing a safe environment for children. This requirement complies with the Vulnerable Children Act 2014.

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.

Prior to Te Papa confirming any offer of employment, pre-employment checks will be undertaken including police vetting and reference checking as a minimum.
