QM launches Danie Mellor’s New Materialism

New Materialism (anticipating Girrugarr) I-V by Danie Mellor.

New Materialism (anticipating Girrugarr) I-V, Queensland Museum, July 2019

A significant photographic artwork donation titled, New Materialism (anticipating Girrugarr) I-V, created in 2015 by renowned artist Mr Danie Mellor, is now at Queensland Museum. Launched during NAIDOC week, this exhibition showcases a collaborative Indigenous project between Artist, Danie Mellor and Jirrbal Elder, Uncle Ernie Grant.

The artwork is presented as five large-scale prints on curved aluminium. Mellor’s creative process was influenced by an ancestral rainforest legend, the oral story of Girrugarr – a magical, shape-shifting ancestor who provided the names of all things in the environment and landscape of rainforest Country.

Donated under the Cultural Gifts Program, this acquisition highlights the importance and relevance of oral Indigenous cultural knowledge.
