QM’s World Science Festival Brisbane 2022

Media Release, World Science Festival Brisbane programmed for scientific surprises in 2022, World Science Festival, 28 January 2022

Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts The Honourable Leeanne Enoch

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch today launched the 2022 World Science Festival Brisbane program, revealing a range of thought-provoking, fun, and immersive creative experiences showcasing the connection between the arts and science.

“The World Science Festival Brisbane’s theme in 2022 of ‘Science, People, Heart’, will investigate how science, creativity and art are helping shape a brighter, more hopeful world,” Minister Enoch said.

“The collaboration between art and science weaves a story that has been told for thousands of generations and is key to engaging our future, and this year’s World Science Festival Brisbane will again inspire the hearts and minds of Queenslanders of all ages.

“In 2022 the bold, contemporary program of over 130 events will have almost 50 free shows and will include the City of Science, Education Programs, Conversations and the much-loved The Hatchery; Turtle Conservation Experience.

“The program will explore some incredibly exciting themes, over 60,000 years of knowledge from the First Scientists to The New Space Age, to discovering the accelerating universe, space tourism and the significance of 3,500 satellites with multiple rovers on Mars.

“World Science Festival Brisbane 2022 encourages us to study the significance of science on our every-day lives, by engaging in new medical and technological advances, interwoven with the fragile balance of our natural world,” Ms Enoch said.

This year Curiocity Brisbane will be delivered as a key pillar of World Science Festival Brisbane, showcasing interactive sculptural, digital, large and small-scale artworks in locations throughout the Cultural Centre, South Bank Parklands and Brisbane City.

“The Palaszczuk Government has committed a further $9 million to ensure the World Science Festival Brisbane and regional programming can continue to be delivered for three more years,” Minister Enoch said.

“This iconic event has attracted more than 800,000 visitors over its six years, and injected more than $36 million into Queensland’s economy, bringing science out of the labs and into our communities and regions across the state.”

Tourism and Innovation Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the dynamic partnership of the World Science Festival Brisbane and Curiocity Brisbane created a unique visitor experience.

“The Palaszczuk Government is an enthusiastic supporter of these events for their strong track record of encouraging visitors to explore Queensland’s capital and our regions.

“Creative art and science are a terrific catalyst for visitors to discover the many tourism experiences on Brisbane’s doorstep, from the amazing Moreton Bay Islands to the world-famous Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.

“This unique festival of art and science will be welcome news for Brisbane accommodation and transport providers, cafés, restaurants and tourism operators.”

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said this year the festival will be an extraordinary scientific and creative journey with new experiences and the return of some much-loved favourites.

“This year, audiences will have the chance to revel in science that thrills and challenges, take part in dynamic talks, engage in loads of family fun and explore interactive art installations with the addition of Curiocity Brisbane,” Dr Thompson said.

“Arts and science are expressions of what it is to be human in this world. Both are driven by curiosity, discovery and the aspiration for knowledge of the world around us.”

World Science Festival Brisbane 2022 delivers on the priorities of Creative Together 2020-2030, the Queensland Government’s 10-year roadmap for arts, culture and creativity in Queensland by activating local places and digital spaces, driving social change and strengthening Queensland communities.
