The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for-profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool, the Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is of international renown as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history.  In all, some 350 staff work to bring our goldrush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

About the role:

The Carpenter is responsible for undertaking work at the general direction of the Manager Building & Construction in the construction and fabrication of a range of major and minor building and renovation works across Sovereign Hill Museum, Rare Trades Centre, AURA, Sovereign Hill Hotel and Narmbool to a very high standard. The work must be undertaken with a sound understanding of heritage aspects of buildings and infrastructure as they pertain to our era whilst maintaining OHS standards in the workplace.

Job and Task Responsibilities include:

  • Construction of a range of major and minor buildings and renovation works across Sovereign Hill
  • Carry out maintenance of all areas of Sovereign Hill
  • Carry out maintenance in historical and non-historical areas of Sovereign Hill and Narmbool as directed by the Manager Building & Construction
  • Respond to maintenance needs across the site of Sovereign Hill and Narmbool as directed by the Manager Building & Construction
  • Follow and apply maintenance programs

The successful applicant will need:

  • At least 4 years of work experience gained whilst undertaking a carpentry apprenticeship is essential
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Carpentry is essential
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • An understanding and commitment to ensuring a safe work environment
  • Knowledge of current Building Regulations and OHS Standards is essential
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work to deadlines
