About us

Gwoonwardu Mia was established to be a common meeting place to recognise and celebrate the five language groups of the Gascoyne Region, to be a significant tourism attraction and provide quality employment opportunities for Aboriginal people. Gwoonwardu Mia is hosted on Yingardda Country. In July 2019, the Western Australian Museum became the manager of Gwoonwardu Mia.

The Western Australian Museum works collaboratively with Aboriginal communities in the Gascoyne to achieve a financially and culturally sustainable Culture Centre, which maximises its business potential and is also the recipient of ongoing state support.

About the role

The Regional Manager, Business and Strategy provides leadership of the team at Gwoonwardu Mia, responsible for the delivery and implementation of cultural services, including public exhibitions, events and activities, and training activities for users from within the region and beyond.  It focuses on strategies and initiatives which celebrate and recognise the Aboriginal culture and heritage of the Gascoyne region.

This role requires an individual with extensive experience working with Aboriginal communities and with strong business management and financial skills, as well as a strategic approach to business and community development. The ability to establish an environment that fosters community unity, partnerships and networks, is essential.

About you

The ideal applicant will be a self-motivated leader with a track record of working with Aboriginal communities to deliver positive initiatives, and facilitating the values that underpin the centre’s vision, including economic wellbeing, social inclusion, and connection to people and communities.

You will require strong leadership and management experience to lead the business operations of the centre, including strong physical, financial, marketing, training and tourism skills.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Build staff and organisation capability and responsiveness in the planning, development, delivery and management of services and venues.
  • Develop and maintain a competent and engaged workforce that is aligned to deliver Gwoonwardu Mia’s core business and objectives.
  • Plan and manage projects that are complex in nature and considered to have a strategic impact across the community and the region.
  • Build networks and develop collaborative working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including the Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation PBC, and the other four language groups of the Gascoyne, the local community, industry, Government, and other stakeholders.
