Position Description

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to over 200,000 visitors each year. The MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Its mission is ‘making sense of the world by discovering and interpreting the past and present for the future’.

Primary Objective:

To manage, develop and coordinate the MAGNT’s Collection Management program, including documentation, display, handling, photography, storage, transportation and risk management as they relate to the museum’s activities of acquisition, exhibition, preservation and research.

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Plan and coordinate the collection management program to provide effective delivery and support towards MAGNT primary custodial functions including acquisition, exhibition, preservation and research activities.
  2. Manage the documentation of the Collection and implementation of collection management systems including the standardisation of data fields and amalgamation of datasets for improved cataloguing, access and reporting.
  3. Lead the development and implementation of policy and procedures that provide for the legal and physical protection of the Collection.
  4. Build, lead and support a dynamic inter-disciplinary team that is adaptive to organisational change and motivates achievement.

Selection Criteria: 

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications and experience in application of professional museum standards in registration and collection management practices gained through working in a museum-related environment.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with documentation of museum collections and with implementation and use of collection management systems that support, research, access and reporting on the collection.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the management of loans and acquisitions including processes that provide for safe and effective handling, packing, transportation, installation, display and storage of cultural objects in a variety of media.
  4. Demonstrated experience in timely and accurate preparation of reports on matters that relate to the collection including Board and Annual Reports and with compilation of data for audit, valuation and insurance purposes.
  5. Strong leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills to enable effective team development and high performance delivery within a multi-disciplinary work environment.
  6. Demonstrated experience in development and implementation of risk management plans to minimise risk and to safeguard staff and the collection.
  7. Highly developed communication and networking skills at the institutional, government and community levels.
  8. An ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures and a sound understanding of Work Health Safety (WHS) practises to ensure WHS system compliance.
