The School of Social Sciences is one of three schools within the Faculty of Arts, which provides a very rich intellectual environment with over 3500 students studying undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a broad range of disciplines in the humanities, cultural and social sciences, languages and music.

Through a unique collaboration between Western Australia’s public collecting institutions, the British Museum and an interdisciplinary team of researchers, the Collecting the West project aims to understand how practices of collecting and display created knowledge about Western Australia that shaped its social relations, mediated its relationship to the environment and produced its identity in Australia and overseas from pre-colonial times to the present. This understanding will be used to produce a new vision of how contemporary collecting and display practices could enable a new vision of Western Australia’s place in the world to emerge, one that is better suited to the demands of the future.

In this role you will support research by the Collecting the West team into records relevant to various institutional histories and collecting networks in Western Australia. The position will be based at UWA in the School of Social Sciences. The researcher will work closely with university researchers as well as Partner Investigators in the WA Museum, State Library, British Museum, Art Gallery and Deakin University as directed.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A PhD in a relevant field, such as History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, or Archaeology
  • Experience of research relevant to understanding institutional histories and collecting networks
  • A track record of working positively in collaborative research
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative
  • Communication skills, including in academic publication
  • Ability to liaise with partners and stakeholders
  • Skills in data collection, entry and analysis
  • Solid organisational skills, particularly for management of digital data
