The Western Australian Museum is positioning itself through scientific and academic excellence, public programs and relevant exhibitions to keep pace with the rapidly changing face of Western Australia. The Museum has made a major contribution to the collection, conservation and research of the State’s natural and social history, maritime heritage and the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities in Western Australia.
The Western Australian Museum is part of the Culture and Arts Portfolio, brought together by the Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA). DCA is the State Government agency responsible for the Government’s support of management and development of arts and culture in Western Australia.
Conditions
This vacancy is initially a full-time appointment reverting to part-time from 3 January 2018, for a combined period of 16 months, with a possibility of extension/s.
You must have tertiary qualification in biology to be considered for this position. All overseas qualifications must have been assessed for Australian equivalency.
Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, applicants for this position may be considered for ‘similar’ vacancies within the Culture and Arts Portfolio and/or the wider public sector which arise within a reasonable period of time. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position, then the next most suitable applicant may also be selected from this process. Future vacancies may be considered – permanent and fixed-term, part-time and full-time.
Location
This position is primarily located at the Museum’s Collections and Research Centre at 49 Kew Street, Welshpool.
Job Description
The position exists to provide accurate and timely identification of troglofauna for the WA Museum and its clients, and to provide advice on the taxonomic status and distribution of each species using sequence data. In liaison with other staff, the incumbent is also expected to prepare scientific publications on the WA troglofauna for submission to scientific journals.
Specific responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):
- Provide selected molecular systematic work for RioTinto projects.
- Process specimen loan requests for RioTinto consultants.
- Prepare content for the WAM database and website.
- Process database searches for RioTinto consultants.
- Quality check RioTinto specimen submissions.
- Analyses resulting data with suitable software packages.
- Produce peer-reviewed molecular systematic descriptions.
