Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories.

An opportunity exists for a highly motivated Sales Assistant to join the Museum Store at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal. We are looking for an experienced retail assistant who is able to work autonomously and oversee our store on the weekends. The role is as varied as the working environment and will require enthusiasm, warmth, flexibility and the ability to confidently handle situations that may arise. You will work with the Retail Operations Manager and Retail Team to achieve sales targets and help with the day to day retail sales and operations both onsite and on-line. This position is 32.5 hours per week, Saturday and Sunday 9.00am to 5:30pm and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11.00am to 5.00pm.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A passion for Māori and New Zealand arts, crafts, culture and history.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in achieving high performance in a retail sales environment, preferably including online sales.
  • A people person with the ability to work with a diverse client, customer, team and supplier base.
  • Proactive awareness and engagement with a wide range of cultures and associated protocol and traditions within Auckland, with particular reference to the Māori Dimension (He Kōrahi Māori) and Pacific Dimension (Teu le Vā).
  • A positive attitude and desire to enhance Auckland Museum’s reputation for excellence.
  • A problem solver with a continuous improvement approach to their job with a high attention to detail and organizing skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to work in a way consistent with values and building a cohesive and productive team.
  • Computer Literacy including POS, EFTPOS, social media familiarity and the ability to further knowledge in these areas.
  • Energetic with a desire to work in a fast-paced and lively organisation.
