Louis Mayfield, Scientists to visit Whyalla, 5 June 2016

The South Australian Museum is taking some of its top scientists to Whyalla next week as part of Out of the Glass Case – a program that promotes the Museum’s collections and the importance of science to remote and regional South Australians.

The visit coincides with the spawning time for Giant Australian Cuttlefish in the shallow waters near Whyalla.

Senior scientists on the Whyalla trip include two who have done extensive work on species in the Upper Spencer Gulf: Professor Steve Donnellan, a leading evolutionary biologist who helped identify the Giant Australian Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) as a separate species, and Dr Cath Kemper, Senior Research Scientist of mammals and marine mammals expert, who is studying the health of dolphins in the Upper Spencer Gulf, which includes Whyalla.
