This is a joint appointment between the Australian Museum and University of New South Wales.

The Australian Museum operates within the NSW Department of Justice. The Museum provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The Australian Museum’s purpose is to be a place of exploration and discovery, inspiring responsibility for our world by promoting knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of science, nature and culture.

The School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large teaching and research school within the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales. ). BEES is a large teaching and research school within the Faculty of Science that undertakes comprehensive education and research in the mainstream disciplines of geology, geography, biology and environmental science. The successful candidate will further develop the research profile of the Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI) in the area of vertebrate palaeontology through the Palaeontology, Geobiology and Earth Archives Research Centre (PANGEA) and/or within BEES. S/he will supervise postdoctoral junior academic staff and postgraduate students.

About the role
Increase the impact of evolutionary science at the Australian Museum and the University of New South Wales by undertaking an innovative field and collection-based research program in vertebrate palaeontology and engage diverse audiences in the broader fields of palaeoscience and geoscience.

About the Palaeontology Collection
The Palaeontology collection at the Australian Museum is one of the oldest in the country, and acquisition of fossils commenced during the Museum’s very first year of operation in 1829. The collection currently holds about 141,000 registered fossil specimens and 14,000 registered thin sections, with representatives of most major fossil groups (invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, algae, and trace fossils) from NSW and other states and territories of Australia, as well as from overseas. The Collection has been divided into two parts:  the General Collection and the Type Collection. The Type Collection includes all the primary types, plus specimens figured or cited in publications. It has an estimated 26,000 specimens, including about 5,000 primary types.
