Auckland Museum has launched Future Museum, a high-level strategic and capital investment plan that will guide a process of transformational change. This change spans all the dimensions that the museum works in – onsite, offsite and online – and will ensure the museum can achieve its vision and mission over the next 20 years.

The Collections Cataloguing Project is focused on improving the documentation of objects in the collections. Auckland Museum is recruiting now for a team of highly motivated, enthusiastic museum professionals to join the Museum in this project at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal. The collections, and knowledge about them, are often the essential material for exhibitions, programmes and events for family, formal education, research and tourist audiences. These roles will be part of the core team readying our collection for the future.

The Collections Cataloguing Project is looking for the following positions as part of the Natural Science team, to work alongside colleagues from Human History and Documentary Heritage.

  • Senior Collection Technician, Natural Science: 1FTE, 4 years fixed term contract
  • Collection Technicians, Natural Science Collections Cataloguing Project: 3.4 FTE, up to 4 years fixed term contract. We will consider requests for full-time and part-time roles.

To be successful in these roles, you will have, as a minimum:

  • Relevant museum experience including object handling, cataloguing and packing
  • Subject knowledge relevant to the Museum’s Natural Science collections, in particular Marine, Entomology, Botany and Geology
  • Demonstrated understanding of taxonomy and Linnaean classification
  • Knowledge of and interest in New Zealand flora and/or fauna.
  • Collection database experience is essential, preferably in Vernon CMS
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills and a strong work ethic
  • A relevant degree is desirable

You must be eligible to work in New Zealand to apply for any of these positions.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to be part of a fabulous New Zealand organisation committed to telling our national and Auckland stories and reflecting our unique place in the South Pacific.
