Job Description
The Senior Collection Manager, Documentary Heritage leads the team of Collection Managers and Collection Technicians responsible for the Museum’s Manuscripts, Museum Archives, Photography, Art, Born Digital, Ephemera, Sound Archives, Publications, Rare Books, Maps, Plans and Serials collections. Managed by the Head of Documentary Heritage, this key role oversees the processes relating to acquisitions, cataloguing, loans, and public and internal access, to ensure their long-term preservation and active use. This full-time, permanent role requires someone with extensive collections management expertise and proven ability to manage, train and supervise staff, as well as engender enthusiasm and commitment.
Desired Skills and Experience
To be successful in this important role, you will offer:
- Extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of collection management practice relating to Documentary Heritage collections, gained through at least 5 years working in a GLAM institution
- A degree/qualification in a field relevant to this position’s activities or a tertiary library/information sciences qualification
- Considerable experience in collection database management and development (preferably using Vernon CMS)
- A good understanding of tikanga Māori
- Awareness, sound judgement, sensitivity, and cultural competency
- Demonstrated experience in managing and developing a high performing team
- Ability to build a work environment that empowers staff and maximises contribution and performance
- Budget management experience desirable
- Demonstrated effective verbal, written and listening skills
- Ability to manage resources in an environment of shifting priorities
- Demonstrated ability to balance the application of professional standards and procedures with pragmatic realities of individual situations
- Ability to negotiate priorities and communicate outcomes to team members and stakeholders
