The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is Tasmania’s leading natural, cultural and heritage organisation. It is a combined museum, art gallery and herbarium with almost one million items of the State collection in its care. From February 2018 TMAG will be a Statutory Authority within the State Government, and draws resources and staffing from the Department of State Growth. TMAG provides a vibrant, professional and stimulating environment for tourists, locals, employees, and volunteers.
TMAG are seeking an expert practitioner, to undertake conservation services and provide expert advice particularly on paintings and other related objects and also the capacity to provide expert advice on scientific and related Issues in all aspects of museum conservation and environmental monitoring and control.
Some of the major duties of the Senior Conservator (Painting) role include:
- Providing conservation services to ensure the safety of Paintings in the collection of, or on loan to, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG).
- The development, co-ordination and review policies and services relating to the conservation of the State collection.
- Monitoring the environmental conditions within storage and display areas and provide advice on matters of storage, display, handling and transportation.
- Preparing objects for travel, documenting the condition of incoming and outgoing objects and providing advice and assistance to curators and the Registrar on loans to the collection.
- Providing high-level advice, support, guidance and assistance on conservation matters to staff.
- Providing conservation advice and services as required to other bodies and individuals responsible for cultural heritage collections and act as a professional representative of the Museum when required.
- Undertaking priority setting and identification of appropriate grants and income generating professional services activities.
- Supervising the Conservation Technician whilst liaising with the Senior Conservators, Objects and Paper to develop work plans for the role. As required supervise other technical employees, contract conservators, conservation students and volunteers.
- Maintaining an awareness of best practice and current developments in conservation procedures.
- Undertaking complex treatments on paintings, including but not limited to cleaning and varnish removal in painting, treatment of unstable paint, repair of supports, etc.
