The Museum has an exciting opportunity for a professional to join the Collection Care and Management Business Unit as a Senior Conservator to lead and manage the Paper & Textiles Conservation team, delivering a range of exhibition and collection projects and programs.

The Paper & Textiles Conservation team works to care for the Museum’s collections through:

  • Collection maintenance and preventive conservation programs,
  • Exhibition preparation and advising on mounting, lighting and packing for exhibitions and travelling exhibitions,
  • The application of risk management to the care and management of the collections,
  • Conservation treatments and approaches,
  • Working collaboratively with other sections within the Museum and providing preservation advise to other sections,
  • Plus a range of activities across the Museum including participation in public programs.

The key duties of the position include:

The incumbent will have proven experience in effectively leading teams in a museum environment. Ability to develop and implement team management strategies to achieve quality outcomes, including effective resource management, work scheduling and planning. A strong communicator, with proven effective negotiation skills and capacity to support a team through periods of change and ambiguity. Demonstrates a strong ethic for continual improvement, encourages and facilitates innovation and excellence. A strategic thinker, who can implement strategies to develop teams that are flexible, adaptable, agile and confidently deal with change

A good understanding of project management and ability to apply the principles to various programs and activities. Exemplifies an organised and pragmatic collaborative approach to deliver a range of concurrent projects in unity with others across the organisation.

The successful candidate will have well developed expertise across a broad range of conservation activities. They will have an in depth understanding of cultural materials conservation including current approaches and relevant legislative and compliance requirements, and be able to provide advice on complex problems and issues. The incumbent will possess high-level experience in paper, textiles and/or audio-visual and photographic materials conservation.

The position entails working closely with conservation and registration colleagues and a broad range of internal stakeholders across the organisation, external clients, volunteers and contractors on a variety of matters relating to the collection.
